Music journalist and blogger Manuel Brug (Die Welt) shares essential insights about Herbert von Karajan’s legendary performance of Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis with the Berlin Philharmonic. Karajan was able to work for this recording with the most extraordinary quartet of soloists: Gundula Janowitz, Christa Ludwig, Fritz Wunderlich and Walter Berry, whose performances remain unsurpassed to this very day.
‘The Agnus Dei represents an attempt to come to terms with Beethoven’s failings as a human being. In this sense the Missa Solemnis was a personal triumph for Beethoven, and one which had the liberating effect of enabling him to tackle the musical and human problems of the Ninth Symphony and the late quartets which lay ahead.’ (William Drabkin)
