(15 Mar 2017) The Northeast of the US was in dig-out mode on Wednesday, a day after a treacherous storm packing strong winds and accompanying plummeting temperatures left some residents dealing with rock-hard ice and others with more than two feet (60 centimetres) of snow.
The powerful nor'easter that paralysed much of the Washington-to-Boston corridor on Tuesday fell short of the predicted snowfall in many areas.
But the 29.7 inches (75.4 centimetres) of snow that fell by mid Wednesday at the Burlington International Airport in Vermont was the third-most on record and about four inches (10 centimetres) shy of the high established in January 2010.
Meanwhile, in Albany, New York, streets were largely cleared Wednesday of the almost two feet of snow that fell.
But many cars were still buried under thick blankets of snow.
Portland, Maine, also set a record for the day, receiving 16.3 inches (41.4 centimetres), while in New Hampshire, big snow totals included 23.6 inches (almost 60 centimetres) in Stratham in the south.
But there was an upshot to the snowfall - a late-season boost to the region's ski areas.
