J.M. Synge's great tragic one-act play about Aran islanders provides the vehicle for Vaughan Williams' most successful opera. V.W. was inspired by the theme of human endurance in the face of the natural elements, and his opera is absolutely faithful to the original play - indeed it is almost word for word! The music is emotionally powerful, culminating in a lament worthy of comparison with Dido's great farewell.
