Did you know you can save Canna bulbs year after year? Well you can and it's super easy to do! Wait until the first light freeze(s) occur and the vegetation dies off. The first thing you are going to do is remove all the dead stalks and leaves about 3-6" above the soil line. If your plants are in a container, tip the container over and pop out the root ball. If your plants are in the ground, remove the rootball by using a shovel or pitchfork and digging an area wider than the root ball so as not to damage the plant. Try to get off any large amounts of soil but don't worry about being too clean, it's ok to leave plenty on so long as they are stored in a dry environment. If the root ball is too big, like mine was, you can divide it by using a shovel and trying to find the path of least resistance. Divide the root ball to the appropriate size for you. Place in your basement or a dark area that will not freeze and stays dry. Excess humidity can cause the roots to rot in winter.
