What would happen if plankton suddenly went extinct overnight? Well... a truly terrifying situation would unfold. Beginning with the complete collapse of aquatic ecosystems in both fresh and salt water areas, the next step would be a global hunger crisis sparked by the extinction of almost every aquatic creature.
This would trigger chaos in a socioeconomic sense. But the worst part, are the effects to the climate of the Earth, and the fact that, post extinction, humans only have been 100 to 150 years worth of oxygen before they also join the extinction crisis, lest they figure out a way to revive, replace, or counter the effects of a world that's suddenly 50% lower in oxygen levels than it was prior to the extinction of plankton, but most importantly, of phytoplankton. That was responsible for contributing an immense amount of oxygen to the planet.
