Some 300 die-hard swimmers dressed in colourful outfits took to the ice cold waters of the river Rhine, Germany, for the annual New Year swim. Participants drifted along the river for about six kilometres in temperatures just above 7 degrees Celsius. Everyone who braved the cold waters received a medal after the 45-minute swim and a glass of tea or traditional German mulled wine. Report by Sarah Kerr.
