Seed banking is an efficient and effective method of conserving many plant species, as long as seeds can survive drying and freezing. But how can you work out the right long-term storage method for the seeds you are collecting? Understanding seed characteristics is essential. The updated Germplasm Guidelines include a key that will help you decide what tests to run, even if seeds are scarce or hard to germinate.
Leaders in seed storage physiology Dr Karen Sommerville, Research Scientist, and Graeme Errington, Seedbank Curator, walk us through the processes used by the Australian PlantBank of the Royal Botanic Gardens and Domain Trust. Please note that the Seed Information Database is now hosted by the Society for Ecological Restoration in collaboration with the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew. It can be accessed at [ Ссылка ]
A fantastic companion to the chapter on Identifying Non-Orthodox Seeds in the third edition of ‘Plant Germplasm Conservation in Australia: strategies and guidelines for developing, managing and utilising ex situ collections in Australia’.
