Language Deprivation is a big problem in the Deaf community. It is a form of oppression even though it is almost always unintentional, the pain hits harder when it is being done by your loved ones. 👈🏻
Picture a typical dining table gathering with your family. There are a lot of sharing positive or negative experiences, jokes, and light-hearted conversations. ❤️
Deaf children are not included in the said conversations, so they are not able to process, experience, and understand the use of language. They lack the true bond families should have. They struggle with putting together a puzzle 🧩 without all the vital pieces. It is like watching a movie without knowing how it ended. 🤷 It is a stressful event for a Deaf child and over time it is exhausting.
They are not able to develop appropriate social etiquette and behaviors, too. Language deprivation can impact memory development, cognitive development, brain development, and cognitive capacity that making it harder for children to retain and understand things like literacy and math. 📚
Deaf children also developed a way to cope during these events such as pretending they know what is going on, avoiding the family events altogether, reading a book, eating their food in silence, etc.
This is why ASL needs to be put above all others to ensure all Deaf children have access to language to secure their futures.
