(26 Jun 2019) The 2015 Nobel Peace Prize winner, Tunisian trade unionist Houcine Abassi, urged Venezuelans on Wednesday to promote a dialogue in their country without foreign intervention.
Abassi, who arrived to the Venezuelan capital on Tuesday, after he was invited by the local NGO Activism and Investigation for Coexistence Network, said he was distrustful of foreign intervention in the dialogue.
The Secretary General of the General Union of Tunisian Workers (UGTT) is a member of the so-called Tunisian Quartet, made up of four civil society organizations that sponsored a dialogue in the political crisis that broke out in Tunisia in 2013.
The group was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2015 for their role in helping build democracy in the Arab nation.
Abassi was cautious about the future of an eventual new dialogue in Venezuela saying he was "neither pessimistic nor optimistic."
He said that if a new dialogue is held, the sides should contemplate putting the the country's interests first and "move away from foreign interventions."
Norway back in May hosted a dialogue between the Venezuelan government and the opposition, but it has so far yielded very few results.
During his four-day visit to Caracas, the Tunisian trade unionist is scheduled to meet with President Nicolás Maduro, opposition leader Juan Guaidó as well as other representatives of the government and the opposition.
