How To Solo Over...m7b5 (Haf-Diminished) chords with the Locrian Mode. Let's get some dark and dissonant melodies with #Locrian Mode Ideas for #improvisation. Locrian is Mode 7 in the major scale system, so for use over diminished triads, or half-diminished chords. I personally don't find Locrian great as a single mode to jam on incessantly, since diminished chords by their nature are pulling our ears somewhere. However, if we use it in a place where it does resolve, it can work well.
So for this video, I used a minor ii-V-i in Am to demo (Bm7b5 E7 Am). In minor keys the ii is iim7b5, so Locrian works perfectly. I start by taking a minor pentatonic and transforming it into a diminished pentatonic (1b34b5b7) Then by adding the b2 and b6, we get the complete mode.
In the video I mention some ideas you can use on the other chords, but for now, focus on getting down the scale fingerings I show for the B Locrian. You can play it over the whole thing, but, in minor keys especially, it sounds stronger to isolate each chord with a different strategy. So work up to that. Have fun!
