In 2019, The Midgardian interviewed author Nancy Marie Brown (Song of the Vikings, The Far Traveler, Ivory Vikings). At that time she was conducting research for her book The Real Valkyrie: The Hidden History of Viking Warrior Women (2021). In this interview, Nancy discusses how culture colors our view of gender roles and how the rigors of life during the Viking Age and the meritocracy that grew from it lent itself to greater gender equality than many women enjoy even today.
