Common causes
1. Nonoperative trauma
2. Electrolyte disturbances
3. Opioid
4. Infection
5. Surgery
Clinical Features
1. Nausea
2. Vomiting
3. Abdominal pain
Complications
1. Cecal perforation
2. Peritonitis
If this condition goes unrecognised and untreated, the continued distension can lead to perforation that is associated with a high mortality rate.
Treatment
1. Bowel rest
2. Anticholinergics like neostigmine
3. Colonoscopic decompression
