Chandrababu Naidu's return to power in Andhra Pradesh has reignited the dream of developing Amaravati as the state's capital. This ambitious project, covering 217 square kilometers, was Naidu's flagship initiative, intended to model the city after Singapore. The vision for Amaravati began to take shape in 2015, following Naidu's assumption of the Chief Minister's role after the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh. The foundation stone for Amaravati was laid by Naidu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2015, marked by symbolic gestures such as bringing water from the Yamuna River and soil from the Parliament building. By 2019, Naidu had also laid the foundation for a permanent secretariat in the Amaravati region. However, progress came to a standstill that same year when the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP), led by Jagan Mohan Reddy, came to power. Jagan proposed a three-capital plan for Andhra Pradesh, designating Amaravati as the 'Legislative Capital'. This decision halted all ongoing construction projects in Amaravati, causing significant distress to local farmers who had donated their lands and leading to a dramatic drop in real estate prices over the past five years. With the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) now back in power, there is renewed hope for the revival of the Amaravati capital project, potentially reversing the economic downturn experienced by the region and its residents.
