Elephant & Mouse Company (ISR)
Repertory Theatre
by Eldad Cohen
A crazy fringe comedy about the even crazier world of Rep Theatre.
This new, quick paced dialogue comedy by contemporary Israeli playwright Eldad Cohen, hammers the rich but pompous heritage of established theatre, including it's classical materials, renowned veteran actors, and of course it's powerful and money-driven management .
Young timid playwright is invited by neurotic, Hamlet-obsessed national theatre manager to discuss his Debut play. When art meets production value things are never easy, but nothing on God's green earth could prepare this young man for the zany ride he is about to take.
As it turns out the artistic director has a personal agenda concerning the playwright's own biography : his deceased legendary actor/father (and best friend to the artistic director) who mysteriously died on stage whilst performing Hamlet; and his alleged adulteress mother. As the room becomes crowded with ghosts from the past, skeletons from the closet and other revived clichés, the thin borders between conscious and subconscious , theatre and real-life, implode in a groundbreaking climax.
The Elephant and the Mouse have collaborated on more than one occasion, but this production marks their debut public performance. This daring dynamic duo is a Tel Aviv based theatre company, formed by Erez drigues, who currently works at the "HaBima" repertory theatre and Iftach Jeffrey Ophir, rising star of the opposing "Cameri" theatre. Both are also acting, writing, directing or producing individual plays in independent or fringe theatres.
