Anna's hummingbird (Calypte anna) bathing in water trickling through the ditch that feeds the desert oasis, Quitobaquito Springs in the Sonoran desert close to the Mexican border at Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, Arizona. As of December 16, 2019, border wall contractors were drilling for water 8 miles from Quitobaquito Springs. Water is drawn from the desert aquifer and used in wall construction. Lowering the water table puts a fragile resource and endangered species at risk. To avoid the risk of drawing down the aquifer beneath Quitobaquito, the US Fish & Wildlife Service requested that drilling not take place within 10 miles of the Springs. Customs Border Protection indicates they won't go closer than 5 miles to Quitobaquito. Background sound is from traffic on the Mexican highway on the other side of the border.
