Rana Basharat Ali Khan Calls for Immediate Global Action on AI Governance to Safeguard Human Rights
Rana Basharat Ali Khan, Chairman of the International Human Rights Movement, has issued a compelling call to action for the international community to establish robust governance frameworks for artificial intelligence (AI). This appeal follows recent discussions at the United Nations highlighting the urgent need to address the rapid advancements in AI technology.
“The swift evolution of AI technologies presents both unprecedented opportunities and significant challenges,” stated Mr. Khan. “While AI has the potential to enhance various aspects of human life, it also poses serious risks to human rights, democracy, and the rule of law if left unchecked.”
The International Human Rights Movement emphasizes that AI systems must be designed and deployed in ways that uphold international human rights standards. This includes ensuring transparency, accountability, and non-discrimination in AI applications. The organization supports the recent adoption of the Council of Europe’s Framework Convention on Artificial Intelligence, which focuses on protecting human rights in the AI context.
Mr. Khan also highlighted concerns about the integration of AI into military applications, noting that such developments could destabilize global security and lead to violations of international humanitarian laws. He echoed sentiments expressed at the UN Security Council, where leaders cautioned against the autonomous use of AI in selecting or engaging military targets.
“The fate of humanity must never be left to the ‘black box’ of an algorithm,” Mr. Khan asserted. “We must ensure that human oversight remains central in all AI applications, especially those involving the use of force.”
The International Human Rights Movement is committed to collaborating with global partners to develop and implement AI governance structures that prioritize human rights. The organization urges all nations to participate actively in these efforts to prevent the misuse of AI technologies and to promote their beneficial applications for society.
“Unprecedented global challenges call for unprecedented global cooperation,” concluded Mr. Khan. “Together, we can build a future where AI serves humanity without compromising our fundamental rights and freedoms.”
