OVER 4M SYRIAN REFUGEES
The UN says the number of Syrian refugees in neighbouring nations is now over 4 million. The organisation predicts that number will surpass 4.27 million by the end of 2015. Most of the refugees are currently in Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq, Egypt and Turkey. The UN has asked for 5.5 billion dollars from its member states to fund the refugees but so far it has only received a quarter of the money.
ISRAELI CITIZENS HELD IN GAZA
Israeli authorities say two Israeli citizens are being held hostage in the Gaza Strip. They say at least one of them has been held by Hamas since September 7th last year, shortly after the end of Israel’s 50-day assault on Gaza. A Hamas spokesman denied the allegations. He also said that even if the group knew of the man’s whereabouts, they would not share the information publically.
HUMAN TRAFFICKING REPORT UPGRADE
The US has upgraded Malaysia from the lowest tier of its human trafficking watch list. Malaysia’s move from ‘Tier 3’ to ‘Tier 2’ is expected to ease the establishment of the US-led Trans-Pacific Partnership deal in Southeast Asia. On June 29th, US President Barack Obama signed a legislation that gave him power to “fast-track” the deal. Malaysia has been criticised since the discovery of grave sites near its border with Thailand in May. The area is known for camps set up to traffic Rohingya Muslims fleeing from Myanmar and Bangladesh.
POPE PRAISES PRESIDENT
Pope Francis has praised the social reforms that Bolivia’s President Evo Morales has implemented. He lauded the Bolivian government for recognising the rights of individuals and minorities, and taking measures to protect the natural environment. Poverty and the environment have been key the issues during Francis’ papacy. Morales had denounced the Catholic Church seven years ago, as ‘an instrument of domination.’
