On October 23, 1956, an uprising, today known as the 1956 Revolution, broke out in Hungary. It was an attempt by Hungarians to gain freedom and break out from Soviet domination.
- Imre Nagy wanted to be a good communist and a good patriot, he wanted to be a good Hungarian and a sincere friend of the Soviet Union, and that was impossible, wrote Tibor Meray, author of a book about the Hungarian prime minister.
