Dr. Marga Vega, DSPT Professor of Philosophy, reflects on the 2018 philosophy seminar titled "Person and Neuroscience" ([ Ссылка ]).
This seminar, part of the the Person, Soul and Consciousness Project
([ Ссылка ]), investigated various challenges that arise from neuroscience (and artificial intelligence). Can the findings of brain science demonstrate that we do not have free will? Can machines instantiate consciousness and intentionality? What is the relation of firing neurons to perception and conscious awareness? Where is consciousness? How do we understand the currently developing interface of mind, brain and machines? Is our thinking determined by material processes? Where does Aquinas’ analysis of mental faculties fit into brain science and neurophysiology? This seminar invited outside speakers who are working in the field (particularly in the Bay Area) to help answer these questions.
