For those who are unfamiliar, the NFL is organized into two conferences, each of which sends six teams to the playoffs each year. However, for the 2020 season, they increased the number of playoff games to seven from each conference. They added an extra game to the regular season in 2021, making it 18 weeks long instead of 17.
So, how did this choice come about? Money was at the heart of the change. The NFL is a money-making machine, and adding two extra weeks to their coverage increases their earning potential even further. According to Nielsen statistics, viewership is increasing year after year, with a 17 percent rise in the previous year alone, which is why NBC, ESPN, ABC, FOX, and CBS are spending $100 billion for the rights to broadcast these games.
These TV deals account for more than half of the NFL's revenue, and the more weeks they can show, the more money they can make. And that's before we even get into big-time sponsorships. An NFL sponsorship package can vary from $10 million to $300 million. In terms of ticket sales, an NFL team may earn well over a million dollars every game simply by selling tickets.
So, how did the addition of games affect the product in the field? Ask any NFL fan, and they will tell you that the first-ever week 18 of the regular season was maybe the greatest day of football in the previous ten years. Having extra playoff slots made late-season games more significant and increased their entertainment value. But with week 18 success came a dud in the playoffs. With the inclusion of the two extra teams, the opening weekend of the playoffs is now known as super wild card weekend. Instead of the usual Uber-competitive contests, the majority of the games were blowouts. The product on the field wasn't particularly exciting, and even the contested games lacked a multitude of talented players.
Despite negative reviews about the games, the devoted NFL fan base tuned into each and every one of them. And, instead of simply showing games on Saturday and Sunday, as in the past, the league was able to add one on Monday night, allowing us to devote even more of our week to football. It is estimated that the two extra playoff games generated $150 million in revenue. From the league's perspective, adding those games was a big success. And, in the fan's view, you have to take the good with the bad because they aren't going to modify the schedule anytime soon.
What did you think of the extended schedule? Should more leagues follow suit? Is the NFL taking advantage of its fan base? Let us know In the comments below.
