Today on the Cinema NipponCast we explore the age-old, earth-shattering question...was Osamua Tezuka a FURRY?! You might know Osamu Tezuka as the godfather - or even the GOD of manga and anime as we know it. From Mighty Atom / Astro Boy to Jungle Emperor Leo / Kimba the White Lion and so many more, Tezuka is sometimes known as the Disney of Japan thanks to his humongous impact on Japanese animation as we know it. His ties with American otaku who (Coincidentally? You decide!) became the founding fathers of the modern Furry fandom in addition to his frequent use of anthropomorphic characters have led some to believe him to have been a furry at heart. Others have staunchly defended his legacy, instead insisting that he was merely making children's animation which would naturally include anthro characters. But did you know that in the mid-2010s his daughter unearthed some old sketches of Tezuka's which set the fandom ablaze with speculation once again?
Today we'll discuss Tezuka's life and work, those connections with the early Furry fandom, and the sketches in question. And at the end you decide - Was Osamu Tezuka a FURRY?!
Special thanks to Mark Merlino for providing a wealth of knowledge on this topic, the history of the C/FO, the furry fandom, and the early history of Japanese animation in America.
