Madison Cunningham - In From Japan. An exclusive live performance for Vevo.
You probably knew that Madison Cunningham was a bit of a philosopher the first time "Song In My Head" entered your world. The 2019 gem, from her 'Who Are You Now' debut, references "a line that never stops playing," making the best out of the worst, and being uncomfortable with "too much silence." The best songwriters do weigh in on the conundrums we all face, and more and more, the 26-year-old is joining those ranks. 'Who Are You Now' was nominated for a Best Americana Album award at the 2020 GRAMMYs, and last year's 'Revealer' nailed it in the Best Folk Album category at this year's show. The SoCal native grew up in a religious household, and played guitar in her dad's church, ultimately recording a spiritual album as a teen. As her musical interests grew, her performance talent followed suit. Soon enough the contact numbers of wise artists such as Chris Thiele and Andrew Bird were in her phone, and this ardent Jeff Buckley fan was on her way. That debut made a splash (don't miss the deep cut, "Common Language"), and 'Revealer' cemented it. Increasingly confident at the mic, last summer's Tiny Desk Concert further revealed her charisma. You'll find the same zest in her rhythmically sophisticated performances of "All I've Ever Known" and "In From Japan." When you're done watching, find out where Cunningham is playing near you and grab some tickets. She's too good to miss.

LYRICS
Rocket to land in from Japan
Tell me what's your mission here
Lord only knows
It's been weighing on your mind
Eyes are like signals, traveling missiles
Waiting on an act of God
To level the pressure
And the claustrophobia
It comes and goes
Cosmic revelation and plateaus
Tryin' be the next original
In a tribute band
Watermark
They're trying to own the image nature carved
Well metadata won't support your cause
Did you expect anything more or less?
No one's holding you back now
No one's holding you back now
Carnival skies, ballet on ice
Bombs exploding in reverse
The world's greatest song
Is one no mortal's ever heard
Wired for sound, infected with doubt
Petals falling at your feet
It's hard to pick out
The imitation from the real thing
Out from the West
The city sparkles like a sequined dress
You're sitting right across from a lifeless
Animation of yourself
The dog days are getting smaller as you pull away
A phone line from the future
Calls to say, ""You're gonna mess it up again
My friend""
No one's holding you back now
No one's holding you back now
The planet in orbit wanes
Some things are too hard to say
Out loud
No one's holding you back now
No one's holding you back now
No one's holding you back now, no one
No one's holding you back now
