When I Grow Up, I Want to be Cuban"
30min. Documentary Film - by Alfredo De Lara
This first person narrative is based on my experience growing up in Miami - the first American born son of 1960’s Cuban exiled parents. It is the story of our yet undefined “Cuban-American” generation. About how we, despite never having lived on the island, hold-fast to our Cuban identity.
This film explores the meaning of "Cuban American" and asks; What role, if any, will we play in a future Cuba?
I look deeper into the cultural realties with the guidance of Cuban-American community leaders, including; a veteran journalist and co-founder of Univision, Telemundo and CNN Spanish television networks, a constitutional lawyer working on property rights issues between the two countries, a Cuban-American politician, Veterans of the Bay-of-Pigs invasion and the US Presidential Poet, Richard Blanco.
The film is set for television release as the US and Cuban leaders meet in April at the 2015 Summit of The Americas in Panama.
