The case of Syesha Mercado and her family highlights the racial disparities in the child welfare system.
Black families are more likely to be reported to child abuse hotlines and investigated for child abuse. Also, the likelihood that their children will be removed from their care is very high. At least 95% of children in the foster care system are Black and Brown, in big cities such as New York City and Chicago.
Dorothy Roberts, professor of law and sociology at the University of Pennsylvania Law School, joins Yodit Tewolde on “Making the Case” to talk about why Black families get their children taken from them.
All this and more on “Making the Case.”
