Ismail Haniyeh, political leader of Hamas, met with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in Tehran the day before he was killed in an Israeli air strike, while attending the inauguration of Iran's new president.
Hamas reported that Haniyeh "died as a result of a treacherous Zionist raid on his residence in Tehran." The Iranian News Agency reported that one of Haniyeh's bodyguards was also killed in the strike.
The Iranian Revolutionary Guard announced an investigation into the incident, stating: "We are studying the dimensions of Haniyeh's martyrdom incident in Tehran." Israel has not yet commented on the incident.
