With her breakout role in the hit '90s sitcom "In the House '' alongside LL Cool J, Maia Campbell became a sensation among movie fans. Suddenly, the actress disappeared from the public eye, putting an end to her promising career.
This sudden exit of Maia from the screen created a lot of curiosity among the public. Recently, the actress has made an appearance, providing an answer to these burning questions from the public.
So why did Maia Campbell quit her career as an actress? Watch on to find out.
The American actress Maia Campbell was born on November 26, 1976, in Takoma Park, Maryland, to Tiko Campbell, an architect and author, and Bebe Moore Campbell, a New York Times best-selling author. Some years after Maia's birth, her parents divorced, and her mom married another man named Ellis Gordon in 1984. Maia went to the local high school in Los Angeles for her high school education, and after graduation, she moved to Philadelphia in the summer to study Theater.
At the age of sixteen in 1993, Maia landed her first role as an actress, playing Lucky's (Tupac Shakur’s) sister, in 'Poetic Justice'. From there, she landed her role as Nicole on the critically acclaimed sitcom 'South Central'. During this period, Maia enrolled at Spelman College in the United States for her college education, and during this period, her agent called her to audition for a role in the sitcom 'In the House'. The audition was successful, and she starred as Tiffany Warren, the drama queen of the sitcom. Maia acted alongside stars such as LL Cool J and Debbie Allen, making it her standout role.
Despite battling with the disorder, Maia continued getting roles throughout the 2000s, but they became smaller and less significant. In 2005, Maia's mother, Bebe, wrote a book titled '72 Hour Hold'. The book talks about a mother's anguish as she tries to cope with her daughter's descent into mental illness. Bebe said it was based on real-life events that engulfed her own family. Many people believe the book is in reference to her daughter.
Since the death of her mother, Maia's mental health has experienced a serious regression. In 2007, Maia made several headlines for the wrong reasons. Firstly, a since-deleted video of her singing Ashanti's Foolish song while unclothed became widespread online. According to MediaTakeout, the website that posted the video, Maia made the video in exchange for drugs, but no concrete sources supported the allegations, so they remain unconfirmed.
During the next few years, Maia was seen out and about, and there weren't many headlines about her until 2010 when a video of her surfaced again. Before that video, Maia was spotted in February of 2010 looking better and cleaner than ever before, but that didn't last long. The new video showed Maia babbling nonsensical phrases to someone inside a house and later to anyone within earshot while pacing up and down a Los Angeles street.
After this video went viral, Maia's stepfather, Ellis Gordon, released a statement to the public saying, "As a family, we have been struggling with Maia's illness for quite some time." He also added that "We continue to hold fast to our faith and hope that someday she will realize that healing will begin when she decides to reach out and accept the help and treatment that have been offered to her."
Maia spent 2013 working on maintaining her sobriety and peace of mind. During an interview with Parle Magazine, she revealed that the Iyanla show helped her heal and establish better relationships with her family.
She moved out of her residential treatment center later on. Also, in an interview with iPower 92.1's TT Torrez, Maia opened up a little more about her current relationship with her daughter.
But in a video message posted to the Instagram account of the urban pop-culture site Baller Alert, Maia released a statement stating that she doesn't need help. "I don't need a benefit concert for mental health. Don't (direct message) me." When the cameraman asked how LL Cool J could get in touch with her, she replied, "Don't call me; I'll call you." In a tweet posted around the same time late Monday night, LL Cool J appeared to take the hint, writing, "You can't help someone who doesn't want your help."
No news of Maia was heard again until 2020 when it was reported she was arrested in Atlanta for her role in a street racing incident. And according to a Facebook User, London Taji'er, she always ran into the 'In the House' star in Atlanta, and was consistently begged for money and rides by the actress. This is an account of why Maia has never been active after rising to the limelight in the 1990s. We all can see what a terrible situation the former actress is in, and the least we can do is hope help finds her soon.
