Tenebrae is the name given to the solemn celebration of Matins and Lauds, the first two hours of the Divine Office, on each of the last three days of Holy Week constituting the 'Pascal Triduum'. This includes six psalms interspersed with responsories and canticles in plainchant. The candles are gradually extinguished throughout the service, leaving the church in relative darkness, hence the name of the service: 'Tenebrae' (darkness). This is also the name of the second responsory on Good Friday, based on the lines from St Matthew's Gospel on the crucifixion: "From noon, darkness came over the land..." (Mt 27:45).
