So Otomedius Excellent is finally out in North America. I actually for some mysterious reason got my copy a day before the rest of the world, so it was fun to be alone on the Leaderboards for a day (and yes, I took plenty of screenshots to prove it). For what it is, the game is fun and worth a purchase. I got the Collector's Edition and the pillowcase is still in the plastic wrap in the box :D
Most of the criticism I've heard about this game are divided into three camps. The first is people who just don't like Gradius games, which is fine. There's no rule saying you have to like anything. The second is people who hate the fanservice, which is a non-argument as far as I'm concerned. The game has "otome" in its title so what did you expect? The third is people who say the game is too easy. For the most part, I have to agree with that. For people new to shmups, it is a perfectly challenging game. For more experienced players, the game does not get difficult until many loops in, which turns the game into a test of endurance. You can in multiplayer choose which loop to start on and I wish that option was available for the Story mode too.
Now, onto the video. This is a no miss 1CC run of the first loop in Score Attack mode. I'm playing Anoa with Speed.A, Homing Missiles 2, Winder 2, and Gravity 2. Speed.A is very reminiscent of how speed is controlled in Pink Sweets so it's a natural choice for me. The combination of Homing Missiles and Gravity turn Anoa with all her options into a powerhouse. Her motto with this customization should be "shoot first, never ask questions." The only downside is that it is very difficult to shoot into small areas, making the Stage 5 boss notoriously difficult. Not impossible, but very difficult. There is an eighth stage only available in the Expert difficulty Story Mode. It plays more like a bonus stage than anything else. But if you want Hyper Anoa, you need to make sure to beat it with Anoa.
Can't wait until the extra characters DLC comes out here. Kokoro Belmont looks like a blast to play.
I'm always looking for more friends to play with, so if you want to play online multiplayer with me, add Korszca to your friends list!
And for those of you who have been with me for a while, yes, I finally have an HD recorder. I went with the AverHD; it's small, sleek, and can record in a higher bitrate than the Hauppauge! HD PVR which is useful for post processing. So for you, that means HD footage from Xbox 360. So stay tuned!
