The Native Dancer series is Vera's special gift to the legendary Wayne Shorter on his 87th birthday, celebrated on August 25th. Vera handpicked outstanding musicians to show their perspective and perform each song of the album Native Dancer, Shorter's first collaboration with iconic Brazilian singer Milton Nascimento.
Due to this pandemic crisis, and since Vera's Heartbeat tribute to Shorter was postponed to 2021, Vera envisioned this project to join the ongoing efforts to help Shorter with medical expenses. We're supporting the San Francisco Jazz Organization to raise funds for the Wayne Shorter Fund.

"This Native Dancer series was created as a birthday gift to me. It's great to see the past functioning as a flashlight into the creative process of this new generation. I want to thank Vera and everyone who has been a part of this! Can't find anything hipper than THANK YOU!!!"
- Wayne Shorter
Shorter recorded Native Dancer in 1974, soon after moving to California and it shows his love for Brazilian music. He decided to team up with Nascimento shortly after meeting him in Brazil in 1972. Nascimento and his longtime musical partners, the maestro and pianist #WagnerTiso and the drummer #RobertinhoSilva, came to Los Angeles to record the album with Shorter, #AirtoMoreira, #DaveMcDaniel, #DavidAmaro, #JayGraydon, and #HerbieHancock.

Pedro Martins: "Wayne is my hero. The first time I heard his music was inside a beetle (car). A friend played “Atlantis” for me and I just couldn’t believe what I was hearing. That moment represents a break in my life where I understood for the first time how majestic and holy the “sense of mystery” can be. And that it's really my ultimate taste in music. Wayne’s music goes beyond and proves that everything at all is possible when you put all your heart and soul into it. it’s the most beautiful thing... I couldn’t be happier to be part of this tribute."
Wayne Shorter: "Pedro! You have the ammunition to conquer whatever resistance you may encounter! You must keep going forward, no matter what! Thank you for this gift."
