A study by researchers at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston suggests some drugs used to treat rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis may also lower those patients' risk of developing diabetes. The research appears in the June 22/29 issue of JAMA. In an accompanying editorial, Tim Bongartz, M.D., and Yogish Kudva, M.D., both of Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., comment on the study's significance.
Dr. Bongartz, a rheumatologist, says the study makes important progress and discusses the additional research needed before physicians can apply the findings to patients.
