Yogi's Treasure Hunters receive a call from Top Cat saying "All the toys in the world have been stolen!". It's their job to find out what has happened to them. They set out to solve the mystery, but while doing so, everyone except Yogi are capture by the Greed Monster. Yogi not only has to find and collect the missing toys, but now has to rescue all his friends as well.
The Amiga version has not been longplayed before, only an attempt was done, but the player never managed to finish it (blamed on bad crack, but he just didn't know what to do, didn't even use a single item).
I usually record the whole intro tune before moving on to play the game (a lot of people don't like that as they always wonder why I'm stuck at the title screen in many of my longplays), so played it fully as an outro/ending instead this time as it's shown there as well.
I started out by running all over the map making notes of where the different keys and items were (didn't bother to plan a nice route tho, so going back and forth a bit). I looked at other videos to see differences and one of the longplayed versions is the C64 one. On C64, the items are not in the same place, and there's no "puzzle" solving (or whatever to call it) like there is in the Amiga version. By that I mean the Amiga has objects you need to pick up and use in the right places.
The game's objects/items:
Keys - these will open doors of the corresponding color (once a door is open it will stay open throughout the game)
Bubble Gum - Sticks Yogi to the spot for a limited time.
Can of Pop - Doubles Yogi's speed for a limited time.
Jar of Sweets - Used as ammo to throw at monsters.
Jar of Honey - Makes Yogi invincible for a limited time.
Toys - Yogi has to collect these to pickup bonus points.
Money - Collect money to turn someone else into the greed monster, thus turning Nathan back to normal and giving you access to the toy machine.
Here's the "puzzle" objects/items lacking in the C64 version (from what it looked like anyway):
Plank - Needs to be placed at 01:50 to repair the bridge so you can get across.
Sponge - Used to get rid of the blue stuff at 03:05.
Pin - Used to pop the balloon enemy at 08:03. You can still get past him, but you lose half your food (energy), so if you have less than half and touch him, you die.
Soda Syphon (is what the manual calls it) - Is used to kill the plant monster at 03:33.
I prefer to play floppy versions of games, but could only find cracked versions of this game, even though Hall of Light says an SPS version exist (couldn't find it). They all lacked the intro/title picture. So, I went with the WHDLoad version. Usually I would just take the image from WHDLoad and add it to the longplayed floppy version, but as they missed the image (and some cracks can be bad), I went with WHDLoad.
The reason for preferring floppy over WHDLoad is WHDLoad doesn't always like savestates. It's SPS floppy disks I like to use, as they are "pure", unaltered. Too bad I didn't find the SPS version, because now I don't know what are the original default "high scores" names. Too bad Codetapper (the dude who WHDLoad-ified/patched the game) added his name to the high scores. Wonder if the other names on the list are original though. Edit: OK, they are not, at least not Jimbo, as that's the guy who provided Codetapper with the original disk.
So, in this WHDLoad version, the high scores shows: Codetapper, Jimbo, Frank, Chris.
In one of the cracked floppy disks, it shows: Rhino, Sauron, On Big, Feet. Another cracked version has the same names, except Sauron is replaced with Skates.
So, wonder what the original hs names are. I check the artists' names and none of their names are mentioned in any of the high scores, as that's usually the names they use.
When you run out of food, you get a screen with Top Cat saying "You have run out of food Yogi", with "Game Over" underneath.
While doing my research, which is reading reviews, checking different versions, checking the files on the disk and listening to the music/sound files, I noticed the main music file, which has 4 sub tunes, has 2 speech samples in it. One is the one we hear at the end at 11:15. The other one is not heard anywhere. The game has a cheat code, so thought maybe the other one is played when that cheat is activated, but nope. Anyway, the speech sample says "Yogi's Treasure Hunt!", so I added it to the title picture. This might be where it's supposed to play, and maybe it does in the SPS floppy version but not in WHDLoad for some reason? Or, it's just left out completely (No, I wasn't lacking system memory). -
