Namita Gokhale, Co-Founder and Co-Director of the Jaipur Literature Festival, reminisces about her debut novel, Paro: Dreams of Passion, first published in 1984, which has remained a cult classic over the years. In conversation with journalist Pragya Tiwari, podcaster and writer Eric Chopra and founder of A Suitable Agency, Hemal Sodhi, Gokhale also talks of the trajectory of her literary life, her 23 published books, and her new novella, Never Never Land.
Namita Gokhale is the author of twenty three works of fiction and non-fiction. She is co-founder and co-director of the Jaipur Literature Festival (with William Dalrymple) . Her debut novel, Paro: Dreams of Passion, published in 1984 , remains a cult classic. A novella, Never Never Land is a 2024 publication. Her recent non-fiction includes Mystics and Sceptics- Searching Himalayan Masters and the anthology Treasures of Lakshmi. Gokhale’s work spans different genres, including novels, short stories, Himalayan studies, mythology, several anthologies, books for young readers, and a play. Gokhale is committed to platforming literary dialogue and showcasing the rich diversity of multilingual Indian identity . She is the recipient of various prizes and awards, including the prestigious Sahitya Akademi (National Academy of Literature) Award 2021 for her novel Things to Leave Behind.
Pragya Tiwari is a strategy and culture consultant, Creative Director of Oijo Media and co-founder of the Indian History Collective. As a journalist she has written extensively on politics, identity, policy, and culture and has edited several publications, including Tehelka, The Big Indian Picture, and Vice.
Eric Chopra is the founder of Itihāsology, an engaging and inclusive educational page based on Indian history. He's a writer and researcher with a specific interest in exploring the histories of art, sexuality, and ghosts. Chopra is also a podcaster, curator, and leads heritage-walks and museum-tours in Delhi. He is the co-host of the 'For Old Times' Sake’ Podcast by Itihāsology. He has two forthcoming books: one focused on Delhi’s heritage sites and the ghost stories that surround them, and the other on the Harappan Civilisation.
Hemali Sodhi has over two decades of experience in publishing, marketing and corporate communications. She is the founder of A Suitable Agency, a leading agency that represents writers and artists, and advises on brands on communications and strategy. Hemali is the editor of The Book of Dog, featuring 45 original pieces by some of India’s leading writers and most exciting new voices.
