Welcome to the UniLab, UniLand’s very own science show, that explores the wonders of the Universe. Move over Bill Nye the Science Guy, there are new scientists in town! We’ll be breaking down some complicated STEM/STEAM lessons by doing our own DIY experiments and explorations, perfect for you to do at home or show off at your school science fairs! So grab those safety goggles and have an adult nearby so we can visit the UniLab.

🔴🔴🔴🔴🔴NON-NEWTONIAN FLUID LESSON 🔴🔴🔴🔴🔴
✍🏼OBJECTIVES📝
Students will be able to do the following:
• Define Non-Newtonian Fluid ✅
• Understand what makes Non-Newtonian Different. ✅
• Create their own Non-Newtonian Fluid. ✅
😳WHAT IS NON-NEWTONIAN FLUID?😱
Can something really be two things at once? 😮 🤔
Most substances change states from solid ◾to liquid 💦 to gas 🌫️ when we change something around it like temperature🌡️. Water is a great example because it freezes into ice when it’s cold and boils away into steam when it’s really hot.
But what if there was something that could change based on pressure rather than temperature? There is! It’s Oobleck. Oobleck, like silly putty or quicksand, is not a liquid but something called a Non-Newtonian Fluid.
Ever wondered why it’s so hard to get out of quicksand? Well, when pressure is applied to quicksand (or oobleck), the mixture increases in viscosity or thickness. So when you look at the same idea in oobleck, when pressure is applied, it forces the cornstarch particles together. When you move slowly, it gives the cornstarch particles time to move out of the way. That’s why anything that falls into quicksand usually sinks within it.
💪So let’s try to recreate this process by creating our own Oobleck fluid! 💪

INGREDIENTS:
• 1 to 2 cups of cornstarch 🌨️
• 1 cup of water 💦
• Food Coloring 🖌
• Mixing Bowl 🍜
RECIPE:
• Start by pouring just one cup of the cornstarch into the bowl
• Slowly add in water.
• Mix slowly.
• Keep adding water until it becomes thick and hardens when you tap it.
• If too runny, add more cornstarch and if it’s too thick, add water.
• Add food coloring for effect.
👩🏼🏫LESSON REVIEW 😜
• What make a Non-Newtonian fluid different than water?
• If Non-Newtonian fluids are not changed by temperature, what is it that causes Non-Newtonian fluids to change?
• What are examples of Non-Newtonian fluid in real life?
