(22 Oct 2013) US Secretary of State John Kerry arrived in Rome late on Tuesday, ahead of meetings with Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to discuss the Middle East peace process.
Earlier, Kerry held meetings in London with ministers of 10 other nations who back the opposition in Syria and are trying to convene an international conference in Geneva to set up a transitional government and end the bloody civil war.
In a joint news conference with the Israeli leader on Tuesday, Premier Letta welcomed the meeting in Rome to discuss the peace process.
"The Middle East peace process for us is one of the most important missions, goals, achievements," said Letta.
"We are very happy about your choice being in Rome for having these meetings. Rome is a city of peace and I hope that discussing in Rome will be something positive," he added.
For his part, Prime Minister Netanyahu said he would address the Israeli-Palestinian peace talks and the Iranian nuclear programme in meetings with Secretary Kerry on Wednesday.
"We are interested, all of us, in seeing peace and stability in this region," Netanyahu said.
He also underlined the influence of negotiations over Iran's nuclear programme on the Middle East peace talks.
"If Iran succeeds in its quest to achieve nuclear weapons that would be very, very bad," Netanyahu said.
