According to France''s estimate, at least 130 toxic gas attacks were carried out in Syria between 2012 and 2017. While the west blames the Assad regime for a majority of them, UN investigators could find firm evidence of nerve agents in only four attacks by government forces. For the latest event, the United States puts the blame squarely on Russia - saying Moscow''s unwillingness to restrain the Assad regime is costing innocent Syrian lives. In November, Russia vetoed a UN resolution that would extend the mandate of international inspectors probing chemical weapons use in Syria, saying the team was biased. Last week the head of the UN urged the Security Council to revive efforts to punish those responsible.And France called for a fresh multinational initiative to preserve evidence of chemical weapons attacks. SOT FRENCH AMBASSADOR TO THE UNITED NATIONS, FRANCOIS DELATTRE, SAYING:"Impunity cannot be an option. The criminals that have been identified as having used such weapons, be they state actors or non-state actors, must be punished and those who may consider using them should be deterred from doing so ."The 29-nation group, meeting in Paris, aims to increase pressure on the Assad regime, and on Russia for protecting the regime. France has also ordered, on a national level, asset freezes against 25 individuals and groups suspected of helping Syria''s use of chemical weapons.
