Tom Corbett, a prospector in New Mexico, gets a telegram from a friend of the family named Carradine ordering him to go back to the house where he lived with his wealthy widowed mother right away. Years previously, when she passed away, she left Tom's brother Jeff the house and the land and asked that Tom be exiled. Her final request was for Tom to avoid Laramie Town, but money was sent to him to help him. Nevertheless, Tom bids Murray, his foreman, farewell before mounting his horse.

Tom finds his childhood home abandoned as he arrives in Laramie Town. Tom is admonished to be careful when he sees the Scott sign, which is a giant letter "S" stamped onto a big letter "J," by two ominous-looking goons who claim the land belongs to a man named Mr. Scott.

Came to the realization why the owners are scared as he returns to town and notices that the Scott sign is posted all over the place—on the bank, the tavern, and everywhere else. A sizable group of goons surrounds Jason Scott, a wealthy businessman, as he enters the town square with his sadistic son Junior Scott. Due to the meager earnings the Scotts pay their employees, the family is caught leaving town, according to the Scotts. Junior murders the teenage son of the elderly couple out of the blue in cold blood while laughing robotically.

Tom is directed to an elderly Chinese blacksmith named Sonko, where Jeff Corbett works, after asking about about his whereabouts. Tom is directed by Sonko to the home of his employee. Along with their aging Indian housekeeper Mercedes, Tom discovers Jeff residing in a dilapidated shack outside of town. It is revealed that Jeff is a drunk who has never recovered from losing his mother and the property. Jeff and Mercedes both demand that Tom go right away and will not elaborate on the reason for the summons. They are also concerned that no one else in town who might identify Tom should see Tom.
