Last summer my friend Heather Brooks (@smallwoodlandthings) helped me find a Lactarius indigo, one of my bucketlist mushrooms. This spring she visited California and I had a chance to return the favor as we found her first porcini aka the #kingbolete #Boletusedulis (var. grandedulis). In my experience this species usually fruits in the fall, but will occasionally pop up in the spring when temperature and moisture conditions are just right. Here in California, this species associates with Bishop and Monterey Pines. It is distinctly different from the Spring King (Boletus rex-veris) which fruits in the mountains during spring.

King boletes are excellent edible mushrooms with a nutty sweet savory flavor and satisfying meaty texture, absolutely one of my favorites to find and cook. Hope you enjoy this video compilation.
