Welcome to my review of the Ranger Item Set [レンジャーアイテムセット] from Choriki Sentai Ohranger [超力戦隊オーレンジャー]!
By the time Ohranger aired it had been a few years since a Sentai series had a big cannon based on individual weapons. The concept was brought back with the Big Bang Buster...and done in a somewhat unique way. Rather than being based entirely on the weapons, it uses the combined Ohranger sidearm, the King Smasher, as a base. It looked pretty cool even though it kinda cheaped out on using all of the weapons. Even the way it was released as a toy was a little strange...
The Ranger Item set comes with the Star Riser, one Square Crusher, one Delta Tonfa, one Twin Baton, and the Circle Defenser.
I suppose I need to say something nice about this set. It's bright...and it looks cool when you have them all together as the Big Bang Buster. Also, I'm happy that they took the extra effort to make the Ohranger logo raised on all of the weapons that have one. They really could've cheaped out and made them decals.
Speaking of cheaping out, you may have noticed that I pointed out how many of some of the weapons were included. In the case of the Crusher, Tonfa, and Baton there should be two of each. This set only includes one of each as that is all that is necessary to make the Big Bang Buster. Funny thing, though, you can't make the Big Bang Buster without the King Smasher...which is sold separately. The solution? You can make these two weird weapons out of combinations of the weapons. Neither of which are very effective looking...or appealing.
Basically, this is a pointless set to own unless you have the King Blaster set. The Big Bang Buster is really cool and a great toy to behold, but the Ranger Item set is a dud on it's own. It's really no wonder that this set can be had for incredibly cheap. I paid a whopping $8 for my sealed set last year. If I really cared, I probably could've found an equally cheap set to make the weapons whole.
I should point out that the Power Rangers Zeo version of this toy *kinda* got things right. Bandai America decided to sell all of the weapons together as the Zeo Blaster set. The big drawback is that the Zeo Pistol has zero electronics where the King Blaster does have light and sound. Can't win them all...
I suppose this is more collectible now than it was in the past. Both the Ranger Item Set and King Blaster Set can be had for very cheap these days if you know how to shop. If I had to choose between the two in 1995, it would have been King Blaster Set all day long. If I got the Ranger Item Set as a gift on it's own (and let's be honest...it does have a false appeal seeing as you get five weapons instead of just two) I'd be kinda bummed. Time has kinda turned this one around, but even then it is still missing pieces.
