The frenum is a band of tissue that ties the lip to the gums. It may also tie the tongue to the bottom of the mouth.

This band of tissue can pull on the edge of the gum tissue and can contribute to gum recession. If the frenum poses an issue, we will recommend a frenectomy.

Very often we will remove the frenum with a laser to separate the band of tissue. This frenectomy will make it so the frenum is no longer pulling on the gum tissue.

This procedure is typically painless and is done on the lower anterior.

It can be done on the upper as well, but this is mostly applicable to young children in preparation for orthodontics.

Sometimes we will perform a Frenectomy on the inside of the lower front teeth because it may impact the tongue from moving normally.
This condition is more commonly known as being tongue tied.

In conclusion, a frenectomy can be used to prevent gum recession or accomplish other therapeutic goals.
