(30 Nov 2021) Two elephants at a zoo in Pakistan are to receive urgent medical care after an international team of vets was sent to inspect them.
The vets, dispatched by global animal welfare charity Four Paws, were called into action after a court in Karachi ordered an assessment of the wellbeing of four elephants at Karachi Zoo and Karachi Safari Park.
Dr. Frank Goeritz, the leader of the group, said one of the elephants needed surgery to remove damaged and infected tusks.
A second elephant has dental problems and a medical issue with its foot.
Such conditions “can lead to very severe health issues in elephants up to life threatening situations," Goeritz said.
Overall, he said, the health of all four elephants was generally good.
