South Korea has decided to retest diesel-engine vehicles produced by the scandal-embroiled Volkswagen AG which has admitted to cheating its diesel car emissions tests in the United States.
South Korea's Environment Ministry said on Wednesday that its probes involve four of the German automaker's controversial diesel models -- Golf, Beetle, Audi A3 and VW Jetta.
The ministry said that the investigation will involve up to 5,000 Volkswagen units produced in 2014 and 2015. It also said that those vehicles could be recalled if any problems are found in the scheduled inspection.
The ministry added that in accordance with the outcome of the investigation the authorities will decide whether to expand the probe to all other German diesel cars.
Meanwhile, South Korea's Transportation Ministry said that starting today (Thursday), BMW Korea, the local sales unit of the German brand, is recalling more than 55,700 cars sold in the country for flaws found in timing belt tensioners.
All of the affected vehicles, a combined 24 BMW and MINI models, were built between November 2007 and June 2013, according to the ministry.
