On my radio show, I made a gender non-conforming move. I proposed to my boyfriend live on air. (You'll have to watch the video to see his surprising reaction.) And, there's a reason that the question came from me instead of him. My sweet Julio might be considered undatable by many women.
The proposal came at the end of a two-hour special called "Worthy of Love," where I interviewed people who were successful in finding healthy, committed relationships, despite being stigmatized in the mating marketplace. People who are neurodivergent, trans, disabled, or who may have worked in the adult film industry. I also featured an "anonymous" guest who had trouble on dating apps because he experienced incarceration.
Such mates are not anomalies. America incarcerates too many people for non-violent crimes. According to the Department of Justice, one in twenty Americans will experience incarceration in their lifetime. The vast majority are male. Nine percent ---- nearly one in ten men!!! -- will face prison time during their lifetime.
Julio was one of them. It was a financial crime. He is remorseful and ashamed. Enough said about that.
We met on Bumble at the beginning of the pandemic. Julio's profile read: "I've been on a dramatic path to mindfulness and authenticity." My curiosity peaked! My profile read: "I'm not for everyone." Let's be real. Not many men are attracted big-mouthed, truth-telling, broads.
Stay tuned to watch more about our love story.
