India's first bullet train project is the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor (MAHSR), which is currently under construction. The project is being built with the help of Japan and is expected to cover a distance of 508 km (316 mi) between Mumbai and Ahmedabad.
The bullet train is designed to operate at a maximum speed of 320 km/h (200 mph), and the entire distance between Mumbai and Ahmedabad can be covered in just 127 minutes. The first bullet train section in India, a 50-kilometer stretch between Bilimora and Surat in Gujarat, is expected to be completed in August 2026.
The bullet train will have many firsts for commuters, including special rooms with foldable beds and a warning system to guard against accidents. The Indian Railways will construct bullet train assembly facilities on a public-private partnership basis, and Japanese companies will set up manufacturing facilities in India to build the parts for the bullet train.
