The highly successful GWM Steed 5 range of 1 ton bakkies has very recently received a facelift. With most of the changes concentrated on modernising the frontal aspect of the vehicle and bringing it into line with the newer 5E version.
Changes to the grille, lighting and overall front of the vehicle give it a bold and modern new look.
Under the bonnet, the familiar 2L turbo diesel engine remains unchanged, giving figures of 78kW and 225Nm. It may not be a ball of fire, but it certainly fits the workhorse roll perfectly.
On the interior, you are provided with an effective air-con and basic sound/ infotainment system. The separate bucket seats are cloth covered and very comfortable.
The 5 speed manual gearbox works well with one caveat that may only apply to drivers of shorter stature: with the seat set in an ideal position, it is rather a stretch to engage 1st, 3rd and 5th gears.
Available in both single and double cab versions, the test vehicle was the single cab. The load box is large and although we did'nt test with a load appears to be well up to the task of handling loads easily. Unladen, the ride can be a bit choppy but this is normal for most working bakkies and cannot be considered a criticism.
Priced at R189 900, the number of older Steed 5 models that are still providing heavy duty labour bear testament to the toughness and true workhorse nature of the brand.
