A compilation of footage of a Pileated Woodpecker family that nested along the Des Plaines River in Northeast Illinois this year.

Timeline***
May 28, 0:35 Rainy & Windy. Chicks stay down while parents take turns at the nest
Watched them for a few hours in the middle of the day.
May 30, 1:46 Sunny. Came in the morning. Scenes of the surrounding forest. Dad drums on a nearby dead tree limb.
2:48 Time-lapse of the woods and the nest hole. Dad feeds the young (young stick their heads out). Red-eyed Vireo calls in the background along with House Wren, Indigo Bunting and Common Yellowthroat.
May 31, 4:22 Cloudy all day providing great light. To start, dad watches over the nest until mom gets back, then breakfast is served! Red-bellied Woodpecker calls and drums nearby. Both parents seen together. All 3 chicks poke their heads up at once. Hooded Warbler sings in the area. 5:32 Dad flies away to get more food. Calls loudly and its drumming echoes through the woods.
6:14 Parents make several trips throughout the day. Featured a closeup of dad with all three young begging.
June 1, 8:05 Dad starts the day with his usual routine of not doing much. Then a showcase of some of the other birds around including a cameo of an Ovenbird. Downy Woodpecker also calls. (If you've kept up, we're up to 4 different woodpecker species at this point).
June 3 (evening) 10:39 One last visit to the nest before the young fledge. At this point they've matured significantly sense my last visit 2 days before. Young become sleepy and pushed mom away.
