The Serra Verde Express is the remaining part of an old train route between Curitiba and Parangua Port on the coast. Construction started in 1880 and - to everyone's amazement, especially some Europeans who said it couldn't be built - finished 5 years later.
There are very few passenger trains in Brazil, so this one is a bit special, and surely the prettiest, winding its way through the Atlantic Forest, and from the city of Curitiba - warm and dry - down to the hot, humid town of Morretes, it feels like you enter a different world!
It takes about 4 hours (although it's billed as a 3-hour trip..), and there are a variety of tickets (and comfort levels!) available: we took the cheapest 'economy' ticket for R$75 (GBP16, USD20)one-way, but you can get an 'imperial' ticket with private 1930's style cabin, bilingual (Portuguese and English) guide, food, and beer (R$235/GBP49/UDS63).
