This course on AltusCampus.com is intended to help healthcare workers who participate in interventional fluoroscopy procedures understand the risks of ionizing radiation from the perspective of both patients and staff members, and to train them for responsible radiation protection practices. The course accomplishes this by first providing a brief historical review of the evolution of fluoroscopy equipment over the last century. Units of measurement for radiation are explained, as well as how quantities of radiation should be interpreted. We then cover the science of radiation’s effect on biological systems on the cellular level, which result in undesirable side effects on humans. Finally, good practices for occupational radiation protection and patient dose management are reviewed, as well as Radiation Safety Program requirements.
