In this video, I tour a 40x50 16’ post frame shop in Ohio. When I first arrived at this shop, I noticed the post frame, in its brown colors, blended well on this property in a open setting.
The barn sits back from the home and has a 4/12 roof pitch and a well thought out dual pitch porch (3/12) on the side that gives this barn presence. The full porch, 12x24 and 12’ high adds more space and can be used in the good weather months around Lake Erie.
The colors are well planned on this setting, with a dark brown 3’7” section of wainscot, a contrasting tan sidewall, and a dark brown metal roof. The overhead door trim on the overhead doors are brown as well.
During the video, I show a close up of the brown wainscot, which is a custom panel, which helps with layering the sidewall height. Wainscot can be customized or cut to length to match a barn’s sidewall height.
White soffitt and fascia were used to compliment the brown colors on this barn. A 1’ overhang and a 4/12 roof pitch will protect the barn from rainy and snowy weather around the lake.
Two 12x14 overhead doors are placed on the front gable that provide plenty of headroom for taller vehicles to enter and exit. A 10x10 overhead door on the back gable allows access for garden tractors to enter from a large backyard.
4x2 (white) trimmed windows were placed higher on the sidewalls to give this barn more privacy. Mesh, on the interior side of the windows, is being used to protect the windows from being damaged.
The concrete pad has cured, with a 4” pad, to support residential use vehicles. Before the concrete was poured - 411 stone mix was brought in and compacted to provide a solid base. This stone mix is often used in highway construction as a sandy mix and compacts well.
The interior wainscot, a gray 3’ panel, overlays the R19 sidewall insulation. These 2’ batts were installed, but batts can come in 4’ and 8’ sections as well - if you have more manpower to handle these larger rolls. A white sidewall liner panel, with a standard rib pattern, protect the sidewalls on this shop.
If you notice, we ran 2x6 treated lumber on the interior skirtboard to hold the batts and connect the wainscot. The post selection on this shop was 3 ply (2x6) laminated columns - which are glued, laminated, and finger jointed - which stop twisting and turning of the lumber.
On the shop’s ceiling, we blew in cellulose insulation, an R-30 product, and a metal liner panel was installed. Four ceiling lights were placed from the metal on the ceiling. A coil stock (trim) details the overhead doors on both gables and gives this barn a very clean look.
This multi-purpose shop with tubular concrete is set up to be 50%- 55% (temp) throughout the year. A special thanks to the owners for letting me tour this unique shop.
