Caring for patients and families is one of our greatest privileges here at the IWK. One of our primary goals is to provide parents and their babies with the best start in life. One way we do this is by embracing the Baby Friendly Initiative (BFI).
BFI is an international program established by the World Health Organization and UNICEF to promote, support and protect breastfeeding. Tremendous work has been going on at the IWK to achieve this designation and position the IWK as a center for best practice.
Through each of our individual roles at the IWK, we have a collective commitment to support the BFI. Implementing the Baby Friendly Initiative ensures all staff at the IWK Health Centre have the knowledge and skills to ensure families are set up for success and that they are confident in meeting the needs of their child.
From developing policies within the organization to increasing awareness of the importance of breastfeeding as the normal and safest way to feed babies and young children to improving the care practices, support and experiences of women whether that be while they are pregnant, while they are in hospital having their babies or home again in their communities.
