Avani Lekhara was born on 8th Nov 2001. At the age of 11, she met with a terrible car accident. Avani suffered damage in her spinal cord, losing mobility and sensation from waist down. She was bed ridden for 6 months and became an introvert. Her father then encouraged her to take up a sport. She tried both archery and shooting. Avani was more interested in shooting. She began shooting in 2015 at Jagatpura Sports Complex in Jaipur, India. In 2019, she won the title of the ‘Most promising paralympic athlete. At the Paralympics in Japan, she won two medals, a gold and a bronze becoming the first Indian woman to do so. Lekhara also won India's first gold medal at the 2020 Summer Paralympics. She made a score of 249.6 points in the final event, the young shooter set a Paralympic record and tied the world record. On 3 September 2021, she became the first Indian female Paralympian to win two medals in Paralympics history after claiming bronze in women's 50m air rifle standing event.
